For the first time in a long time, an American-made car won Motor Trend’s “Best Driver’s Car” for 2014. The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 beat out German bests such as the BMW i8, BMW M4, and Porsche 911 Turbo S, as well as conquering other imports like the Alfa Romeo 4c, Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, and Nissan GT-R. The only other domestic model in the lineup was the Ford Fiesta ST, which didn’t stand a chance against the first place Camaro.

The three day test was held on a 2.2 mile track. Motor Trend staff tests the speed, handling, power, and steering to find the most fun and engaging car to drive both on the track as well as the road. Motor Trend was surprised with their chosen winner, but mentioned how light and razor-sharp the steering is, along with the power of the ceramic breaks and naturally-aspirated 7.0 liter LS7 engine.

While flying through the air action-movie style may seem fun, it will wreak havoc on your vehicle suspension. There was no suspension-killing for the Z/28: Motor Trend noted it took every bump, heave, and dip in the track without once leaving the pavement for a drama-free and smoother ride.  On sharp turns the Camaro gripped the road for perfect cornering. Lap 9 on the track was noted as the most difficult curve, where every other vehicle tested floated due to a lack of grip. The exception, of course, was the Z/28, which took the downhill with ease.

The final numbers were released at the end of the race. The Camaro Z/28 sped from 0-60 in 4.0 seconds with a 12.3 second quarter mile at 117.2 mph.  Lap time took 1:37:82 for the 2.21 mile track with a top speed of 123.2 MPH. And while it is not directly linked to the performance of the car, Motor Trend measured a heartbeat of 132 BMP for their drive; far higher than any import model on the list.

This year’s test proved you don’t need to look across the seas for a thrilling ride; the Best Drive for 2014 can be found in our own backyard. To learn more about the Chevrolet Camaros or browse other Chevys, come into Chapman Chevrolet.
