No Compromise in This Sporty Convertible

Because convertibles are usually heavier than coupes, the drop top models are traditionally slower and don’t handle as well as their hard top brethren. The editors at “Car and Driver” magazine put the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible to the test and found that what has been traditionally true can be thrown right out the window. The Camaro SS convertible is not only the fastest drop top pony they have ever evaluated, it also held its own against the hardtop version of the SS. With the 6.2L V8 pumping out 455 wild horses, the Camaro convertible blasted to 60 mph from a standing stop in just 4.1 seconds. That’s only 2/10ths of a second slower than the hard top and 3/10ths of a second faster than the Camaro ZL1 convertible, despite the fact that the ZL1 was packing 125 more horsepower. Underbody Bracing Gives Ragtop Greater Stability

The SS Convertible is 206 pounds heavier than its hardtop counterpart, thanks to some undercarriage bracing that provides both safety and superior handling. “We noticed no squeaks, no rattles, and no rearview-mirror shake,” the “Car and Driver” editors wrote. “The steering remains as razor-sharp and tactile as the coupe’s, and our 152-foot stop from 70 mph is outstanding.” An optional Brembo braking package improves the car’s stopping ability even further. The new Camaro bested the Ford Mustang GT convertible in comparisons of braking, acceleration and cornering as they continue the battle for pony car supremacy that first began in the late 1960s.

Although many of the concept cars built for the annual Specialty Engineering Manufacturing Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas are one-off productions, Chevy is taking a concept from a couple of years ago and releasing it as a Silverado High Desert Package. Refined styling, a lockable cargo system and magnetic ride control are just some of the features coming to the LT, LTZ and High Country trim packages. “The High Desert package blends the capability and utility of Silverado with the refinement and luxury of Suburban,” according to Chevy truck marketing director Sandor Piszar. “It’s ideal for those customers who want both the security of a lockable cargo system, as well as the flexibility of a pickup truck bed.” The High Desert Chevrolet Silverado will be coming to Chapman Chevrolet this fall.

Storage System Conforms to Steel Bed

The lockable, flexible cargo storage system keeps your items secure from both theft and the weather. It adds two side storage bins when installed over the steel bed, along with a three-piece tonneau cover. You can either raise a divider to help keep small items in place, or let the cargo area run the length of the floor. On the High Country, LTZ and LT models of the Chevrolet Silverado, the tailgate locks with the key fob, keeping your stuff safe and secure.

Big Wheels Keep on Rollin’

Choose either the LTZ or High Country trim level and you’ll get monstrous 22-inch wheels with all-terrain tires as part of the High Desert package. The LT trim comes with 20-inch wheels with all-season tires. While those large wheels and tires help you maintain control, so does the magnetic ride control suspension. Sensors are constantly compiling data regarding road conditions and changing the damping of shock absorbers to provide superior handling and ride. The electronically controlled shocks are filled with a fluid charged with iron particles that are controlled by magnetics.

High Desert Adds to Compelling Lineup of Special Editions

Silverado offers a variety of special edition pickups to help you put your unique stamp on your vehicle. The Rally 1 and Rally 2 editions, with sporty stripes and an aggressive hood, are available at Chapman Chevrolet right now.
